My Journey from Windows to Linux
1993 to 2001 Windows 3.11
During this time I had tested a lot of Windows shareware. And I had Windows freeware translated from English to German.
At the end of 1998 I bought Suse Linux 6.0 on 4 CDs
At that time there were actually still CDs and no Internet. It cost 65 Deutschmarks. I just couldn’t believe it, an operating system for so little money.
2001 to 2012 Windows XP
From 2003 to 2010 I was interested in customizing and had created Winamp skins and other things that just went like that. Here I slowly got a desire for something other than Windows. I haven’t been following this for a while, but it started somewhere or somehow.
2003 oct to 2004 oct Suse Linux 6.0
I had found someone who created a second partition for me on my PC and he installed Suse Linux 6.0 for me. I was impressed. Since then, the box has been back on the shelf, at home.
2012 to 2026 Windows 7
The support for Windows 7 officially ended in January 2020, the Extended Security Update until October 2023, but for me until October 2025, for whatever reason.
In October 2025 I was even able to install version 25.2 of LibreOffice, Firefox updates were still coming. In November I was able to install the last update of mp3tag. In December 2025 I was able to install the last update of Notepad++. Scribus 1.4.8 was the last version I was able to install on Windows 7.
The browser not only shows me that there are no more updates. but there is also the F-Droid forum, where it says that this can no longer be displayed correctly in the near future and at mp3tag it says that this website will no longer be displayed correctly in the near future.
How did I get the idea with Linux Mint#
In August 2019 I visited Frank Lüttig (hality.org ), he showed the group Linux Mint and that afternoon I was also in Halle.
During the live presentation at z-Labor e. V. (z-labor.space) in the first half of 2023, they also recommended Linux Mint to me.
And on Mastodon some Linux Mint had also recommended me.
How is it with Linux Mint in an exhibition ?#
There is a Linux Mint acrylic painting in Berlin since 28.08.2020
There was a Linux Mint acrylic painting in Meissen 01.09.2023 - 31.12.2023
There was a Linux Mint and a Flathub acrylic painting in Radebeul 28.09.2025 - 23.12.2025, extended until 31.01.2026
Switching to Linux Mint#
It is planned to release a new notebook without an operating system before June 2026 (is there such a thing ?) or to buy a new computer with Windows and then to find someone who deletes Windows and installs Linux Mint for me.
But I still have a few questions about this#
Could someone imagine installing Linux Mint for me? Since I live in the Dresden area, it would be advantageous to find someone in the area.
To go to Jena and Berlin would be too far for me, only if there is no other way.
I have at least found the Dresden OpenSource UserGroup before. ddosug.org
When I set up my new notebook and got the important files overplayed, including all the acrylic paintings, my own composed music and stuff, I wanted to give this old notebook from 2012 away with pleasure. If anyone can be found for it at all…#
If there is anything missing from this blog article, I will add it in due course. And even if there are still questions missing on my part.#
